Why Local Matters

Medicare in Vero Beach Isn't the Same as Medicare Anywhere Else

Which plan makes sense for you depends on which doctors and hospitals are actually in-network where you live โ€” and Vero Beach has its own answer to that question. If you’re anywhere in the 32960, 32962, 32963, 32966, 32967, or 32968 zip codes, here’s what “local” really means for your Medicare decision.

Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospitalย at 1000 36th Street is the primary hospital serving Vero Beach โ€” home to the Scully-Welsh Cancer Center and the Welsh Heart Center. Whether it’s in-network on a given Medicare Advantage plan varies by carrier, which is exactly the kind of detail worth checking before you enroll, not after.

How To Choose

What Actually Matters When Evaluating a Plan in Vero Beach

A $0 premium headline doesn’t tell you whether a plan works for your specific situation. Here’s what Bill actually checks before recommending anything.

Is Cleveland Clinic Indian River in-network?

The single most important local question. A plan can look great on paper and still not include your hospital or your doctors.

What's the real star rating?

71% of Indian River County plans rate 4 stars or higher โ€” but not all. A lower-rated plan with a big enrollment number isn't automatically the right pick.

Are your prescriptions covered?

A $0 premium plan can still cost you more overall if your specific medications sit in a high-cost tier or aren't on the formulary at all.

What's the true out-of-pocket max?

Indian River County plans average a $5,325 MOOP, with some as high as the 2026 federal max of $9,350. That range matters if you ever have a serious health event.

Medicare Advantage in Vero Beach

How Medicare Advantage Actually Works Here

Medicare Advantage (Part C) bundles your Part A hospital coverage, Part B medical coverage, and usually Part D drug coverage into a single plan run by a private carrier. In exchange for often-lower premiums and extra benefits, you agree to use a defined network โ€” which is exactly why the local hospital and pharmacy details on this page matter more than the national commercials.

HMO Plans

Lower premiums, typically the most $0-premium options locally. You choose a primary care doctor and generally need a referral to see specialists. Care outside the network usually isn't covered except emergencies.

PPO Plans

More flexibility to see out-of-network providers, usually at a higher cost-share, with no referral required for specialists. Slightly higher premiums are common in exchange for that flexibility.

What's usually included

Most Vero Beach-area Medicare Advantage plans bundle in dental, vision, and hearing allowances, an over-the-counter benefit, and often a SilverSneakers or similar fitness membership โ€” on top of medical and drug coverage.

What to actually verify before enrolling

Whether Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital and your specific doctors are in-network, whether your prescriptions are on the plan's formulary, and what the true out-of-pocket max is if you have a bad year health-wise.

Carriers currently offering Medicare Advantage in Indian River Countyย include UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Aetna, Devoted Health, Florida Blue Medicare, HealthSpring, Wellcare, Freedom Health, HealthSun, and several regional and specialty carriers. Not every carrier’s network reaches every part of the county the same way โ€” which is the whole reason to compare rather than pick the first plan you see advertised.

Prescription Drug Coverage

What's Changed With Part D for 2026

If you take regular prescriptions, Part D coverage can matter more to your wallet than which hospital is in-network โ€” and the rules changed significantly in the last two years.

$2,100 annual out-of-pocket cap

Once you've spent $2,100 out of pocket on covered drugs in 2026, your plan pays 100% of covered medication costs for the rest of the year. This cap applies whether you have a standalone Part D plan or drug coverage bundled into a Medicare Advantage plan.

The "donut hole" is gone

The old Part D coverage gap was eliminated starting in 2025 and stays eliminated in 2026. Coverage now runs through just three phases: deductible, initial coverage, and catastrophic โ€” no more gap where costs used to spike.

$615 maximum deductible

Some plans charge less or waive the deductible entirely, especially many Medicare Advantage plans โ€” another reason the specific plan matters more than the plan type.

Standalone Part D (PDP) vs. bundled (MA-PD)

If you're on Original Medicare with a Medigap plan, you'll need a standalone Part D plan for drug coverage. If you're on a Medicare Advantage plan, drug coverage is usually already bundled in โ€” you generally can't have both at once.

Don't skip creditable coverage

If you go without Part D or equivalent drug coverage for 63+ days after you're first eligible, a late-enrollment penalty gets added to your premium permanently โ€” roughly 1% of the national base premium per month you went without coverage.

Enrollment Numbers Don't Always Match Quality

3 Devoted Health plans rate a full 5 out of 5 stars

Devoted Health's contracts H1290, H5299, and H7993 are CMS-rated 5 stars in Indian River County โ€” the highest rating CMS gives, though enrollment in any specific plan should still be checked against your own doctors and prescriptions.

The most-enrolled plan isn't the highest-rated one

Humana Full Access Giveback (H5216-311) is one of the highest-enrollment plans locally, with roughly 3,115 members in Indian River County โ€” but it carries a 3.5-star CMS rating, below Florida's 4.4-star state average. Popular and highly rated aren't always the same plan.

Medicare Supplement in Florida

What Florida Residents Should Know About Medigap

Florida doesn’t have year-round guaranteed issue or a birthday rule for Medicare Supplement like some other states โ€” which makes timing genuinely important.

Your 6-Month Guaranteed-Issue Window

Your strongest protection is the 6-month period starting the month you're 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During this window, carriers can't deny coverage or charge more based on your health.

Outside That Window

Once that window closes, medical underwriting can apply in Florida, which is why timing your Medigap decision correctly matters more here than in community-rated states.

Plan G โ€” 24% of FL Medigap holders

The most comprehensive plan available to anyone newly eligible for Medicare. Covers everything except the annual Part B deductible.

Plan N โ€” 10% of FL Medigap holders

Lower monthly premiums in exchange for small copays on office and ER visits โ€” a solid option for healthy, budget-conscious retirees.

Plan F โ€” 51% of FL Medigap holders

The most comprehensive plan ever offered, but closed to anyone who became Medicare-eligible on or after January 1, 2020. Still held by many longer-tenured Florida beneficiaries.

How Bill Gets Paid

Why This Costs You Nothing

This is one of the most common questions Bill gets, and it deserves a straight answer.

Carriers pay the commission โ€” not you

Independent Medicare agents are compensated by the insurance carrier when you enroll, at a rate set by CMS. Your premium is exactly the same whether you enroll directly with a carrier, through a call center, or through Bill.

No enrollment, no pressure, no cost either way

If you meet with Bill and decide not to enroll in anything, there's no bill, no obligation, and no follow-up pressure. The consultation itself is free regardless of the outcome.

Why Work With an Independent Agent

One Company Can't Cover Every Answer

"When someone calls me from Vero Beach and their doctor is at Cleveland Clinic Indian River, I'm not trying to fit them into one company's plan. I'm comparing what's actually available to them locally โ€” across carriers โ€” and being honest when a plan doesn't make sense, even if it pays me less."

Local Questions

Vero Beach Medicare FAQ

It depends on the specific plan and carrier network. Some Medicare Advantage HMO and PPO plans include Cleveland Clinic Indian River Hospital in-network, others don't. Because network status changes carrier by carrier and year by year, it's worth confirming directly before you enroll.

Yes. In Florida, your strongest guaranteed-issue window is the 6-month period that starts the month you turn 65 and enroll in Part B. During that window, carriers can't deny you a Medigap plan or charge you more based on health history. Outside that window, medical underwriting can apply.

Indian River County has Medicare Advantage plans from a range of national and regional carriers, including UnitedHealthcare, Humana, Aetna, Devoted Health, Florida Blue Medicare, HealthSpring, Wellcare, and others. Which ones make sense for you depends on your doctors, prescriptions, and how you use your plan.

It helps to have your Medicare card, a list of your current medications, and your doctors' names on hand โ€” but it's not required. Bill can start the conversation with whatever information you have.

Correct โ€” independent Medicare agents are paid by the insurance carrier, not by you. Whether you enroll in a plan or not, the consultation itself costs nothing.

As of the 2026 plan year, Indian River County has 44 Medicare Advantage plans from 9+ carriers, including 37 with a $0 monthly premium. Not every plan is a good fit for every person โ€” availability isn't the same as suitability.

Neither is universally "better" โ€” it depends on your plan's network and where you live in the county. Sebastian River sits about 15 miles north and can be more convenient for residents on the northern side of Indian River County, while Cleveland Clinic Indian River is the primary hospital for most of Vero Beach.

Medicare Advantage plans bundle hospital, medical, and usually drug coverage into one plan with a defined local network โ€” often $0 premium but with copays and network restrictions. Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans work alongside Original Medicare with no network restrictions, letting you see any provider that accepts Medicare, in exchange for a monthly premium.

It depends on timing. Outside of Medicare Advantage and Part D's Annual Enrollment Period (October 15 โ€“ December 7) or the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (January 1 โ€“ March 31), your options to switch are more limited. Certain life events can also open a Special Enrollment Period.

No โ€” Bill is based on the Treasure Coast and serves clients throughout Brevard County, Port St. Lucie, and communities across the region, including Vero Beach and the rest of Indian River County.
